Wagner: Der Ring des Nibelungen - Varnay, Hotter, Windgassen, Resnik, Vinay, Greindl, Malaniuk; C, Krauss. Bayreuth, 1953
$55.95
Description:
One of the pleasures of the many broadcasts of the Ring Cycle from Bayreuth in the 1950s is observing how the core cast remained stable while the conductors rotated, revealing just how much authority the conductor wields in shaping Wagner’s monumental work. Clemens Krauss brings a more traditional approach than Hans Knappertsbusch, but his reading is no less full of insight, shaped by purposeful orchestral gestures and keen dramatic pacing. Astrid Varnay and Wolfgang Windgassen are captured in peak form, while Hans Hotter, though beginning to exhibit a woolier tone, still commands the climaxes with confidence. Regina Resnik and Ramón Vinay offer fiery portrayals of Sieglinde and Siegmund. Although he sings like a god, Windgassen occasionally struggles to stay in tempo and make his entrances where Wagner intended.
