Even though it was not Offenbach's wish, it is always fun to hear a single soprano sing all three roles. In my opinion Joan Sutherland has been the only one to do so successfully. She was able to sing the Doll song in key at the beginning and sing Giulietta's lush music in Act II and then work herself into a singing frenzy as Antonia. She is joined by Henri Wilden as Hoffmann and her frequent collaborator Huguette Tourangeau as Niklaus. The sound is fantastic.
