This excellent performance of Eugene Onegin features an international cast of both veteran opera stars and up-and-comers. Here at the beginning of his long career, Leo Nucci is wonderful as Onegin. His voice sounds young and robust and he is surprisingly comfortable with the Russian style. Galina Vishnevskaya gives a definitive performance as Tatyana. Although nearing the twilight of her career, her voice still maintains its freshness and she is very convincing. Nicolai Gedda, once again, proves that there was no style that he couldn't master. Mstislav Rostropovich leads a performance that captures the energetic and brooding quality of this opera. The sound is good.
