It is funny how such a quintessentially Russian work as Eugene Onegin can enjoy almost a second life as a German Opera. Like Jenufa, German speaking countries served as important proponents of this work resulting in many great live performances. This particular one may be one of the greatest. It sports a relatively younger cast. Hermann Prey sings the title role. His voice is incredibly fresh and balances the aristocratic reserve and passion that one needs in this role. Fritz Wunderlich sings Lensky. Both voice and artistry are sublime. Ingeborg Bremmert is also very good as Tatyana delivering a dreamlike letter scene. It is worth pointing out that Olga is played by Brigitte Fassbaender, here still in her twenties. The sound is excellent.
