Puccini: Il Trittico - Sills, Domingo, Treigle, Schwartzman, Bible; F. Patanè. 1967

$14.95

Description:

One of the highest achievements for a soprano is to pull off all three soprano roles in Puccini's Il Trittico. Beverly Sills, known more for bel canto than Puccini, might not seem the obvious choice, but she brings an intensity of feeling—particularly in Suor Angelica—that later made her Donizetti queens so compelling. She navigates the dramatic moments with intelligence and restraint. Take, for example, the high C in “È ben altro mio sogno” from Il Tabarro: where many sopranos would seize it as a moment of vocal bravado, Sills turns it into something tender and introspective, avoiding the pitfall of forcing her voice into unnatural territory. A young Plácido Domingo is thrilling as Luigi, and Norman Treigle—though a bass taking on a baritone role—makes the adjustment worthwhile through the vivid character he brings to Gianni Schicchi. The sound is only fair.
