Manon Lescaut is an opera that needs to be dripping in Italian sensibility to be successful and there is certainly no shortage of that here (despite the fact that the main interpreters are not Italian-born.)  Elena Souliotis' voice may have been slightly past its prime is 1971.  Despite this, Oliviero de Fabritiis remained ever loyal to her and for good reason.  There are breaks in the registers and some tentative high notes but there were few voices that had the combination of innocence and opulence like hers.  Placido Domingo is an ardent Des Grieux.  "No! Pazzo son!" has a visceral desperation and sucks the listener in like few other performers could.  Oliviero de Fabritiis brings his great experience with Italian style to great effect.  The sound is very good.
