From the get-go this production was volatile. There was a unified, and seemingly organized, faction in the audience hell-bent on fighting the changes that Patrice Chéreau was making to how Wagner, and opera, would be produced from then on. This tension is palpable in this recording and even though the picture isn't available, it is clear that the whole cast has been galvanized by being apart of a crucial pivot for all of opera direction and they, along with Pierre Boulez deliver a truly electric performance. Some interesting cast variations from the commercial release is the Fricka of Eva Randová. Randová's Fricka is more harridan than regal queen, and delivers a performance reminiscent of Irene Dalis. The sound is excellent.
