Beethoven: Missa Solemnis - Stich-Randall, Proctor, Pears, Borg; Horenstein. Leeds, 1958

$9.95

Description:

Teresa Stich-Randall’s ethereal soprano suits Beethoven’s idiom beautifully, capturing the spiritual breadth of the Missa Solemnis with grace and clarity—even if the highest passages occasionally push her to the edge. Her performance is nonetheless radiant and deeply felt.

It’s always a fascinating experience to hear Peter Pears outside of his familiar Britten repertoire. Here, his technical command and finely honed musicianship shine through, bringing unusual color and phrasing to Beethoven’s tenor lines. Nancy Procter is a strong and steady presence as the alto soloist, contributing warmth and poise to the quartet.

Jascha Horenstein, stepping in for the ailing Otto Klemperer, delivers a taut and focused reading of the score. His direction keeps the performance moving with a sense of purpose and dramatic shape, despite the last-minute nature of his involvement.
