Pros:

  • Otto Klemperer lightens his approach to Wagner's effervescent comedy, bringing transparent textures and surprisingly fleet tempi to the proceedings.
  • The all-Hungarian cast does extremely well, particularly the Sachs of György Losonczy, who generously gives of his luscious bass-baritone all evening without a hint of fatigue.
  • As Walther, József Simándy lyrical, and technically flawless instrument reminds me a bit of Wolfgang Windgassen.
  • The sound is very good.

Cons:

  • There are some issues with orchestral intonation from time to time.
