This is a sumptuous, languid performance of Wagner's most fairy tale-like opera from the great Croatian conductor Lovro von Matacic. Captured in great sound, von Matacic is most at home in the score's etherial, mystical passages, perfectly capturing the heady, religious aspects of the drama. Both the orchestra and the Choral forces of the Teatro Colón, singing in Spanish while the principals sing in German, sound terrific. Fritz Uhl is a rather light-sounding, mellifulent Swan Knight and if Victoria de los Angeles does not quite float Elsa's narration in an ideal fashion, she makes up for it with sumptuous tone. Franz Crass and Carlos Alexander give strong, well-sung performances as the King and as Telramund, but the glory of the set is Christa Ludwig's demented Ortrud, who gives an absolutely spine-chilling rendition of the evocation to the Old God that sends the audience into a frenzy.
