This performance of Die Frau ohne Schatten comes from Buenos Aires and assembles a cast of singers, some of whom were well seasoned in their respective roles and others who were making initial forays. One of the newcomers (misleading nomenclature as he was a seasoned performer at that point) is Waldemar Kmentt. Kmentt uses his attractive Mozartian timbre to good effect, eschewing the normal screeching that most heldentenors bring to the part. Ingrid Bjoner is an ideal Kaiserin. Her voice may not have been as wild as Rysanek's, but she brings and ethereal purity that makes her all the more sympathetic. Danica Mastilovic does admirably as the Dyer's wife as does Donald McIntyre's Barak. Grace Hoffman is a true delight as the Amme bringing a lot of color to the part. The sound is excellent.
