Before the early music renaissance of the 70s and 80s, when Gluck's Alceste was produced it was often approached from a point of view that was more Romantic in affect than classical, often featured a dramatic soprano in the title role. Although purists may balk at this approach, the romantic style lends itself to Gluck's writing especially when you have a tour-de-force like Leyla Gencer in the title role. Gencer's lends a grandiose sensibility to this tragic opera, feeling no need to hold back for the sake of "taste". She is joined by Mirto Picchi in the role of Admeto who proves a good counterpart to Gencer's over-sized presence. The translation used in this performance is different from the standard version used in the Vienna premiere in 1767 so I was unable to provide detailed track info. The sound is very good.
