It is unarguable that Gwyneth Jones was one of the greatest Wagnerian singers of her day.  Her voice was unsurpassable in terms of volume and her committed portrayals put the "drama" in dramatic soprano.  This recording reminds us that she could excel to similar heights with Verdi.  Controlling a voice of that size is no small task; however, she manages even with the endless lines of the final duet to deliver a delicate and nuanced rendering.  Sandor Konya sings the title role with similar security, and if his voice is not the most glamorous, he sings this notoriously difficult role with confidence.  Nicola Rossi-Lemeni is an imperious Filippo.  Sesto Bruscantini delivers a mellifluous Posa.  The sound is good.
