Pros:

  • Carol Neblett was the perfect Minnie. Her voice had the right balance of warmth and steel to win your heart (as well as your ear.) This performance has particular interest because it marks her first time singing a role she would own for many years.
  • Plácido Domingo singled out Dick Johnson as one of the hardest Puccini roles to sing, however you would have no idea judging from this performance. I would go so far as to make the argument that this was one of his best roles, suiting his temperament and baritonal voice perfectly.

Cons:

  • None to mention.

WONDERFUL

Here we can hear the young Carol Neblett (28) and the young Domingo (33) in a live performance from Torino three years before their famous DG record and their production can match either with the commercial record or the later DVD from the Covent Garden. Minnie is the emblematic role of Neblett and she sings and plays really fantastically. Domingo is also ideal as Johnson/Ramerrez. A pleasant surprise was Basiola's strong Rance. Sanzogno leads the performance masterfully. Listening his productions I think he was one of the greatest Italian conductors of the last century. Though the sound is sometimes not the best according to my opinion this is one of the most beautiful performances of this opera.
