This performance of Otello brings together three powerhouse artists, each commanding immense vocal presence and stage charisma. James McCracken may not have the quintessential Italianate tenor sound, but he delivers an intensity that few can match in what is arguably the most demanding tenor role. His portrayal reveals a deep vulnerability, and the lack of traditional vocal "glamor" adds a layer of authenticity, making Otello's insecurities feel even more justified.
Gwyneth Jones is both ethereal and radiant as Desdemona, avoiding the common pitfall of portraying the character as overly passive. Her formidable spinto reserves shine, particularly in the Act III duet, where she exudes enough strength of character to suggest that Desdemona might actually be capable of standing up to Otello.
Tito Gobbi, though nearing the end of his career in 1966, delivers a robust and intricately detailed Jago, navigating the technical demands of the role with finesse. And as a delightful addition, José van Dam appears as Lodovico.
The sound quality is generally good, though it can occasionally be slightly muffled.
