Kiri Te Kanawa may have been one of the finest Mozart sopranos of all times.  For both beauty of voice and aristocratic poise she was unparalleled.  Here she departs slightly from her comfort zone for Puccini.  Hearing this performance reminded me how in the theater her voice had remarkable cut.   At no point does she seem intimidated by the orchestra.   She is joined by Placido Domingo who sings the part of Rodolfo with passion and love.  Wilhelmenia Fernandez, best known for her role in "Diva" sings Musetta.   Nello Santi brings both schmaltz and good taste to the performance.  The sound is good.
