1970 was the perfect time for Renata Scotto to attempt Elena in I Vespri siciliani. While her voice still possessed all of the agility that made her such a great Violetta and Gilda in her younger days, it was also developing a steelier quality. Throw Gianni Raimondi, Piero Cappuccilli and Ruggero Raimondi into the mix and you have a perfect storm of great Verdi. The sound is excellent.
