This remarkable fragment of a performance of Siegfried offers a tantalizing glimpse into Erich Kleiber’s Ring Cycle. In Kleibers’ hands the score achieves a lightness of touch that one rarely associates with Wagner and he creates seemingly effortless precision from the forces of the Teatro Colón. Max Lorenz is heard in his prime in the title role and Herbert Janssen manages to sing the Wanderer without ever compromising the suave legato of his baritone voice. This recording features the majority of Act I as well as a good chunk of Act II including the “Forest murmurs” which finds Lorenz in particularly fine form. The sound is acceptable for the era.
