José Carreras is the highlight of this performance, captured in clear-sound only a few years into his career. His Riccardo is essentially a more sympathetic take on the Duke in Rigoletto, emphasizing the fun-loving playboy and ardent lover rather than the beloved governor. He’s clearly having a ball, especially in his masquerade as a fisherman. Marisa Galvany, a longtime house singer at the New York City Opera, is on point though occasionally underpowered as Amelia, and Richard Fredricks is a sympathetic, cleanly-sung Renato. Glenys Fowler’s pert Oscar and Fredda Rakusin’s competent Ulrica round out the cast.
