This performance of Aida comes to us from Buenos Aires despite the almost all English cast.  Marie Collier sings Aida.  Again, she may be a short on vocal bloom, but she makes up for it in steal and bite.  And she shows during "O patria mia" that she also could manage the long line that Verdi demands.  Charles Craig is elegant as Radames delivering both the heft and vocal security that this part requires.  Peter Glossop is the most successful at passing for a true Italian singer and the natural gruffness of his voice makes him menacing in his scene with Aida while being able to conjure up suavity during the triumphant scene when he is entreating the king to let his people go.  Jerome Hines is a luxury as Ramfis.  Sir John Pritchard leads his countrymen and woman brilliantly.  I was particularly struck by the ferocity he forces from the orchestra at Amonasro's description of the results of Aida's disobedience.  The sound is very good.
