Verdi: Aida - Collier, Craig, Bartoletti, Glossop, Hines; Pritchard. Buenos Aires, 1966
$8.95
Description:
This Aida from Buenos Aires boasts a strong English-speaking contingent, but that doesn’t mean it lacks Italian sensibility — occasional diction slips aside. On paper, the slender soprano of Marie Collier might seem an unlikely fit for Aida, but she rises to the occasion with secure, polished singing and her trademark dramatic commitment.
Charles Craig brings vigor and intensity to Radamès, even if subtlety isn’t always his focus. Peter Glossop, as Amonasro, fully inhabits the role, pairing dramatic conviction with vocal authority. His Act III confrontation with Aida crackles with energy.
The sound is generally good, although there’s a rough patch during the Act IV scene for Amneris.
