Massenet: Werther (In English) - Brecknock, Baker, Roberts, Wheatley, Tomlinson; Mackerras. London, 1977

$8.95

Description:

Werther gets the English treatment in this performance, and while some of the opera’s distinctly French flavor is inevitably lost in translation, the singers still offer poised yet impassioned performances.

Janet Baker, as Charlotte—as always—is a revelation. Given the chance to fully embrace her Romantic impulse, Baker holds nothing back, delivering a performance that is raw yet always deeply connected to the text. John Brecknock may not be the most glamorous Werther, but he brings the character’s brooding intensity to life with a sense of vulnerability that makes him feel fully human.

The supporting cast is strong across the board and even features a young John Tomlinson as Johann. As a fun bit of trivia, one of the children in the performance is none other than Ian Bostridge.
