I am at loss as to what can I say about Mario Del Monaco's Otello. Many people can describe it far better than I. It combined power, excitement and beauty of tone with eloquence and tragedy. Vocally it is hard to imagine anyone better. Every high note is like a challenge for him to see how close to the brink of human possibility he can push himself. And he never falls. Marcella Pobbe is ethereal and poignant as Desdemona and Anselmo Colzani is of the dignified and poised school of singing Iago. The sound is fair to good but the stellar performance comes through.
