This cast boasts two big names in the form of Magda Olivero and Cesare Siepi. Olivero brings her great sense of style to a role that needs a great interpreter not just a great voice. Cesare Siepi was just born to play the devil. He charms the audience from the beginning with his velvety, robust tones. Giorgio Merighi was not a household name but deserves reconsideration. His voice is tireless in this part and he is well cast in an opera that has roots in bel canto while pointing towards verismo. The sound is fair.
