Ursula Schröder-Feinen is another soprano whom I am happy to have rediscovered. Unlike many of her colleagues who made the switch from mezzo to dramatic soprano, she was always a true soprano. Her voice was slender and in her prime she had gleaming top notes and remarkable ease above the staff. These qualities make her ideal as Leonore. She is joined by Ernst Kozub as Florestan. One can see why Solti wanted him to sing Siegfried in his famous recording. The voice has both power and remarkable control. And like his counter-part he sounds like a true tenor, not a pushed up baritone. In fact the casting is near perfect for this opera because it features singers who sound comfortable both in the classical and romantic styles. The sound is very good.
