Sena Jurinac, in the title role, goes far to demonstrate, not only her brilliance, but that Octavian may, in fact, be a soprano role after all. There is a youthful, boyish quality in her voice that you simply can't get from a lush Wagnerian mezzo like Ludwig or Troyanos. She is joined by Hilde Zadek as the Marschallin. Neither Zadek's voice nor her bearing are that regal, however she has a very idiomatic approach to the German making the long conversational parts of this opera quite compelling and that carries her far. Teresa Stich-Randall's full lyric soprano is a welcome change from the chirpy sopranos who are often cast in this role, giving Sophie a little more substance. Ljuba Welitsch makes a fun cameo as Marianne. The sound is excellent.
