This performance of Don Carlo assembles the best the day had to offer. In 1968 Leyla Gencer may have lost some of the sweetness of her early years and the occasional register break can be jarring especially for such an ethereal character as Elisabetta, however as a trade off her voice does have a darker hue to it and as always she employs her style and technique with aplomb. Fiorenza Cossotto was made to sing Eboli. Her voice has the right mix of wildness and sensuality. And her high b in "O don fatale" would make any soprano jealous. The rest of the cast speaks for itself. Sesto Bruscantini is Posa and Nicolai Ghiaurov is sonorous as Filippo while still retaining the smoothness of his younger years. Bruno Prevedi excels in the thankless titles role. It is also worth noting that this recording includes the fontainbleu scene. The sound is very good.
