This performance of Aida will appeal to the Leyla Gencer fans out there. Even though it was a little late in her career and the voice could at time get a little wooly, it is still remarkable for the control and style she brings to the proceedings, no doubt a result of her long experience singing the bel canto rep. The only other stand-out in the cast is Luisa Bordin Nave who delivers an exciting Amneris. The recording is from an outside performance so some of the warmth you would get in a theater is absent. The sound is otherwise okay, although it seems that it was miked near the timpani because they can at times feature rather prominently.
