Pros:
- This precious document, recorded in pristine sound, provides a unique glimpse into Wagnerian style during the early part of the 20th century. (In 1938 Wagner had only been dead for 55 years so it was not inconceivable that there were many in the audience who remembered the day when he was a "contemporary composer.")
- Karl Böhm strikes a wonderful balance of order and romanticism. The strings of the Dresden Staatskapelle play with remarkable precision, incorporating Italianate portamenti, a tradition that would all but vanish in the ensuing decades.
- The cast is very good, particularly Hans-Hermann Nissen as Hans Sachs who offers stunning vocalism and a nuanced connection to the text.
Cons:
- None to mention.
