Although Wolfgang Windgassen was nearly 40 when this performance took place, he delivers one of the most fresh-voiced Siegfrieds ever recorded, seemingly undaunted by the size of the orchestra or the brutal tessitura. From his entrance, effortlessly sailing up to high C (a note almost always omitted), his Siegfried is an explosion of boundless energy which doesn't cease until the final duet. Although Hans Hotter was immortalized on the legendary Solti Ring, he was a last minute replacement for George London and past his prime. This recording preserves him at his finest. Martha Mödl is in astonishing voice in her brief appearance as Brünnhilde. The sound is excellent.
