I must admit, Ileana Cotrubas did not immediately win me over when I first heard her voice many years ago. However, hearing her again, it is clear that few singers bring her level of understanding and emotional depth, particularly to the role of Violetta.
She is joined by a young José Carreras, who delivers a performance that is nothing short of sublime. The only disappointment comes from Victor Braun as Germont. While his tone is appealing, issues with sagging pitch detract from much of his performance. The sound is good.
