This recording features Teresa Kubiak and José Carreras in the title roles. While Kubiak never achieved widespread stardom, she was highly regarded among her peers, and Butterfly proves to be an ideal showcase for her artistry. Her pure, almost Mozartian tone is beautifully suited to the role, and she summons the necessary spinto power when the drama demands it.
José Carreras's brief appearance as Pinkerton is almost worth the price of admission on its own. In 1975, his voice was in pristine condition, and he delivers a deeply moving performance in the final moments, capturing Pinkerton's devastating realization of his youthful recklessness.
Delme Bryn-Jones stands out as Sharpless, delivering a performance that highlights his silky, robust voice and remarkable sensitivity. Although personal struggles curtailed his rise to greater fame, this recording captures him at his absolute best.
Unfortunately, the sound quality leaves something to be desired. While the voices come through, a persistent dull hiss mars the recording.
