Pros:

  • Few tenures have been as legendary as the Georg Solti era at Covent Garden. In addition to his interpretive genius, he was aided by having at his disposal an almost infinite amount of talent, both imported and home-grown.
  • Ludmila Dvorakova brings glamor and grit to the role of Isolde.
  • Jess Thomas was well into the Heldentenor phase of his career but still manages to display some very impressive delicate singing even amidst the bombast.
  • Donald McIntyre as Kurwenal, Josephine Veasey as Brangäne and David Ward as Marke round out this exceptional cast.

Cons:

  • Now for the bad news: The sound is far from ideal. Additionally, there are a number of drop-outs. Whenever possible I spliced in sections of a performance from earlier in the run for the sake of continuity. The biggest patch comes at the beginning of Act III.
  • The last 45 minutes of the opera are marred by distortion which caused some clipping in the sound. I did my best to remove it, but you can still hear remnants of the clipping during the climaxes.
  • If you can stomach those flaws, you will hear a remarkable performance.
