Pros:

  • In the interest of full disclosure, I will open with the fact that the sound is not great on this recording. The dynamic range is rather narrow and there are occasional pops. That said, if you know this opera well and your ear can fill in some of the blanks, this is a very satisfying performance with a stellar cast.
  • Régine Crespin is radiant as the Marschallin and is captured at the absolute height of her abilities. The way she floats the line "die silberne Ros'n" at the end of Act I is absolutely unforgettable.
  • Kerstin Meyer's handsome mezzo finds a perfect home in the role of Octavian.
  • Teresa Stich-Randall's lush soprano gives the role of Sophie a little more substance than you often hear with the soubrettes who are often cast in this role.

Cons:

  • As mentioned before, the sound is limited.
