I have heard from a first hand accounting that José Carreras was once asked who the greatest tenor of his generation was.  The interlocutor was expecting to hear one of the other "three" but instead he answered Jaime Aragall.  Hearing this recording form the early sixties one can hear what he was referring to.  His voice has a unique sweetness to it while still capable of power.  Leyla Gencer brings her expertise with regards to early Verdi to the role of Elena.  Few sopranos could combine her beauty of tone with her gutsy flair.  The sound is very good.
