Cornell MacNeil was a mainstay at in Buenos Aires during the 60s and thrilled the natives in all of the great Verdi roles.  Here as Simon Boccanegra he establishes why he had such a firm hand on Verdi operas.  His voice has a dark hue and his top is ringing.  Ilva Ligabue, a soprano who although sang in impressive houses, never quite made it to the big time.  However, she holds her own very well next to MacNeil.  The sound is excellent.
