Pros:

  • Giuseppe Taddei is a force of nature on the title role, bringing equal parts power and beauty to one of Verdi's most challenging roles for baritone.

Cons:

  • Unfortunately by 1973 the bloom was beginning to fade on Elena Souliotis' sterling soprano, and although there are moments where some of the lustre returns, the extreme demands of this role only highlight the cracks in her vocal technique.
