Pros:

  • By 1973, Renata Scotto had been singing the role of Violetta for over 20 years (she was 18 when she first sang it.) Although her voice was pivoting towards more dramatic parts, she still shows that she has a lot to say about one of the most complex and human characters Verdi ever created. She navigates "Sempre libera" admirably, although without quite the security of her earlier years, and then unleashes true spinto energy in her Act II confrontation with Germont.
  • A young José Carreras shows why he was destined for stardom. If only the stunning sheen of his voice could have lasted a little longer...

Cons:

  • None to mention.
