Verdi: Il Trovatore - Sass, Casellato-Lamberti, Dunn, Sardinero, Ferrin; Santi. Hamburg, 1977

$8.95

Description:

This recording of Il Trovatore offers a fascinating glimpse into the brief but brilliant career of Hungarian soprano Sylvia Sass. Once hailed as a potential successor to Maria Callas, Sass brought exceptional beauty of tone and a natural sense of style to her performances. Unfortunately, like many other so-called "heirs" to Callas, her voice could not withstand the demands of the repertoire. This performance, however, is a testament to the promise she initially showed, showcasing her artistry at its peak.

She is joined by the veteran Mignon Dunn as Azucena, who delivers an oversized, larger-than-life portrayal, singing with the force and passion of a true dramatic mezzo. Giorgio Casellato-Lamberti offers a sturdy Manrico, providing the ringing tones expected of the role, though his interpretation lacks deeper nuance. Vicente Sardinero brings elegance and suavity to the role of Di Luna, while Nello Santi leads the Hamburg orchestra in a sublime and richly detailed reading.

The sound quality is fair to good, though there is a significant omission at the start of Act III from "Giorni poveri vivea," along with a few minor interruptions. To make up for this, I have included the missing material, featuring the legendary Irene Dalis, at the end of the set. Despite its imperfections, this recording is a rewarding listen for lovers of Il Trovatore and admirers of Sylvia Sass.
