Pilar Lorengar, here very early in her career, sings Pamina. Her voice has a wonderful plumy quality. Waldemar Kmentt may not have had the most beautiful Mozartian tenor but he brings a heft that is nice to have in a Tamino (too often he can come across as wimpy.) Walter Berry seems to enjoy not having to worry too much about singing as Papageno relishing the chance to charm the audience with his warm bass-baritone. One of the highlights is the Queen of the Night of Roberta Peters. A soprano with a secure high f is a rarity. Rarer is still is one who can make it seem so easy. Walter Kreppel is a sturdy Sarastro. The sound is very good.
