This performance showcases a blend of legendary artists, including Leonie Rysanek, James King, Helga Dernesch, and Theo Adam, alongside some brilliant performers who, while exceptional, did not achieve superstar status. Among the standouts are Gladys Kuchta and Berit Lindholm, who share the role of Brünnhilde, as well as Josef Greindl as the Wanderer.
Known primarily for his portrayals of villains like Hagen and Hunding, Greindl’s turn as the Wanderer offers a refreshing opportunity to hear him play a more sympathetic character while delivering some beautifully melodic lines—a true delight. The musical direction by Lorin Maazel is outstanding, with his masterful pacing and exceptional support for the singers elevating the drama.
This combination makes it one of my favorite live Ring Cycles. The sound quality is good.
