Pros:

  • Casting the same soprano in two very different roles on the same night was quite a risk for Wolfgang Wagner. No doubt he slept a lot better knowing that he had Gwyneth Jones on hand. Hearing Jones as both Elisabeth and Venus, it would be very easy to convince yourself that you were listening to two different sopranos. She brings sultry, lush tones to the Venusberg scene - thanks in part, no doubt, to her training as a mezzo - and then finds a remarkable, almost Mozartian purity to Elisabeth's music.
  • Hermin Esser is a sturdy Tannhäuser.
  • Bernd Weikl's Wolfram is jaw-droppingly gorgeous.

Cons:

  • None to mention.
