This is certainly not the most Italianate recording of Aida that you will come across, but it boasts some excellent German singers. Hilde Zadek brings a youthful sheen to the title role as well as a steely and remarkably secure top. Helge Rosvaenge's burly tenor manages excellently when Verdi requires trumpet like ping as well as some very sweet soft singingl. Elisabeth Höngen's voice lacks the glamor of a Simionato but she does remarkably well. The role ultimately is not a good fit for her. The sound is excellent.
