Pros:

  • The star of this performance is conductor Alexander Gibson who simultaneously finds incredible nuance - and even lightness in the score - all while supporting the singers through some treacherous music.
  • It is easy to hear why Karajan was so taken by Helga Dernesch. Her Brünnhilde hits all the marks in the big musical moments, but it is the softer moments - of which there are many- where she truly excels.
  • Ticho Parly buckles a little under the strain, but for the most part his lyrical tenor emerges intact at the end of the evening.

Cons:

  • None to mention.
