This is a priceless document for many reasons. The collaboration between Bejamin Britten and Peter Pears is legendary, however the majority of their collaboration that survives consists of works by the composer. Here we have a chance to hear them interpret standard repertoire including Don Giovanni and Eugene Onegin. Despite his brilliance as a performer, Peter Pears had a very strange and unique vocal production. To hear him sing works from the standard rep, it is clear that he was not only a great interpreter he also knew a thing or two about singing. Many great tenors have avoided singing “Il mio tesoro” but Pears renders the aria flawlessly. Galina Vishnevskaya and Peter Glossop, both of who collaborated with Britten in his own works get a chance to sing duets from Aida and Eugene Onegin. The sound is very good.
