It is a testament to the British and their commitment to the arts that a town like Edinburgh can be treated to a first rate performance of La Damnation de Faust that would be the envy of any major opera capital of the world. Georg Solti amasses a formidable cast with Nicolai Gedda in the title role. Gedda delivers both exquisite vocalism and flawless french style. George London’s booming yet sensual bass proves to be a perfect Méphistophélès. Josephine Veasey’s Marguerite blends lush sensuality with youthful optimism. Solti seems to relish the humor and odd quality of Berlioz’ music, while giving into the romantic sweep with all of his signature gusto. The sound is for the most part clear although missing some depth in the bass.
