Wagner: Tannhäuser - Beirer, Jurinac, Martin, Braun, Talvela; Sawallisch. Milano, 1967
Listen to a Sample:
It is a testament to the Teatro alla Scala that they could produce such a superb recording of Tannhäuser. Hans Beirer sings the title role and offers tireless singing and even hints of vocal beauty. Sena Jurinac seems the picture of youthful innocence from her first entrance and as the opera progresses shows that Elisabeth actually has a lot more substance than one might think. Martti Talvela is an excellent Landgraf as is the Venus of Janis Martin. Wolfgang Sawallisch highlights the lushness of the score. The sound is excellent.
