Pros:

  • Despite the fact that the date, venue and conductor are unknown, I couldn't resist releasing this tantalizing glimpse of a stellar performance of Siegfried.
  • Hans Beirer has not gotten the recognition he deserves for his substantial contributions to the world of opera, particularly in the most dramatic tenor roles. Vocally, his approach to Siegfried seems to be the same as if he were singing a Mozart role. He was smart enough to trust the fact that his hefty tenor voice would carry over the orchestra (which it does and then some.)
  • Birgit Nilsson is in perfect form as Brünnhilde; nailing all of the high Cs with fearless ease.
  • Theo Adam is magisterial as the Wanderer, and Gerhard Stolze is a colorful, and oddly sympathetic Mime.

Cons:

  • The sound is slightly muffled.
