I don't think that Gwyneth Jones sang Ariadne that often. The role does not have the same kind of layered subtleties as many of the other roles with which she was associated but it shows something that many people forget- she really knew how to sing. The arias in this opera are notorious and she is unflinching. It is rare that you get a voice of her size with the control that she had over it. Edita Gruberova proves a charming foil as Zerbinetta. She is well cast next to Jones because she also had remarkable control as a coloratura with a voice that was actually pretty sizable in the theater. The sound is very good.
