Lorin Maazel and the forces of the Bayreuth Festival cap off a memorable week of Wagner with a thrilling performance of Götterdämmerung. Gladys Kuchta steps into the role of Brünnhilde and sings a performance that delivers equal parts power and vocal beauty. Jess Thomas is a burly yet youthful Siegfried. Josef Greindl’s classic Hagen is up there among the best portrayals of operatic villainry in the history of the art-form. Thomas Stewart, fresh from successful portrayals as Wotan, lends his prodigious talents to Gunther. Remarkably there are two other great Brünnhildes in the cast: Berit Lindholm as the third Norn and Helga Dernesch as Gutrune. The sound is excellent.
